Jim, actually I think you could grow the Echium as most descriptions list it as hardy in Zones 7-10; T&M says only hardy in Z9-10 but one site says 3-10; but all include zone 10. Why it survived here, I don't have a clue; LazyS says it resents transplanting which also wasn't true in my case.
I am surprised you passed up a chance to comment on my Little One. Kitty neIN, Zone 5----- Original Message ----- From: "james singer" <islandjim1@verizon.net>

The boys are my favorites. They're the only ones I could grow here, I think. On May 4, 2007, at 10:36 PM, Kitty wrote:Well, I can't believe it. It looks like my Redbud died. But I'm thrilled the Echium made it through, and amazingly well. It's E rubrum or E russicum, not too sure. For 2 winters I dug it up and wintered it in the garage. Last year I just told it sink or swim, and it's back - and it's going to flower for the first time! It's the first photo in this album:http://snipurl.com/1je32There's also a few early spring picks of a frit, azalea, bluebells, and, of course, the boys.
