Kitty, we were in need of new appliances, but it was not urgent.
One of the two ovens still worked. The refrigerator worked OK
but the finish on the outside had eroded and looked pretty bad.
My son's wife is a bright, good-looking woman, actually a
licensed engineer, but she is far too focused on appearances.
I don't really know the source of her insecurities, but it upsets
her when things don't look just right. My son was not raised
that way, but she's the one he has to live with.
No, we didn't purchase the appliances sight-unseen, but the
ones in the showroom were stainless steel and we special-
ordered white which, in the case of the oven, doesn't look
anything like what we expected. When the kitchen was
redone fifteen years ago, it was quite nice and attractive,
but fifteen years takes its toll. The rest of the house suits
me just fine - in fact I love it - but the living-room has wood-
paneled walls which are no longer stylish, and our furniture
has been around. We have too many collections of things
sitting around - we have a fairly large collection of water-bird
carvings, Chet has several hundred pigs, I have a bunch of
cat figurines, and also owls. Not neat and orderly. Not at
all stylish. My DIL has to have a decorator to tell her what
color to paint her walls. I couldn't imagine having someone
else tell me what I wanted.
I found some old ice-cube trays - see, we have lots of
such things which should have been thrown away according
to my DIL - and have managed to freeze enough ice to keep
us going until they come sometime next week to fix the
ice-maker. I still think it's outrageous that they didn't come
right away to fix what they obviously hadn't done right the
first time.

Auralie, it sounds like you were due for new appliances regardless of what
your son thinks. Where did he get such ideas?
I don't quite understand your description though. Did you order these sight
unseen? Still, it's a shame the fridge isn't working properly. Jenn-air
products, from what I've seen are supposed to be top-notch (indicating that
all this time your house has had at least a modicum of fashion and
unshabbiness ;+) ) Spending money on such things should be a pleasant
experience, I hope they get things straightened out for you soon.
