Re: pine trees/bamboo
OK- I'm totally ignorant- what is "knapping"??

Yeah, Tim had some clear glass and a brown whiskey bottle bottom he
was knapping. Also had a lot of volcanic glass (black obsidian &
black/red striped) for the little kids to use when they tried.

Seems to me that I remember reading in a book about Ishi that he did
lots of demonstrations using pieces of glass--broken beer bottles
and the like.

Clumper. It's biggest challege here will be full sun after about 10
am. I may need to throw a piece of shade cloth over this first
couple of years til it's settled in. By then I hope the yews will
be tall enough to provide a little shade. I'd rather have F.
robusta, but they only had it in 5 gal. (expensive) pots.

From the pictures I've seen, the Green Panda is a pretty bamboo,
Judy. It also seems to be a fast grower and cold hardy. Is it a
runner or a clumper?

I ordered some bamboo from Forest Farm yesterday, Fargesia rufa
"Green Panda", Phyllostachys dulcis (will live in a pot), also
Magnolia Sieboldii, Cornus Rosabella, C. varigata (shrub),
blueberries- Northcountry & red huckleberry.
The Yews are all in. I hope to plant the Kinnickinnick, the other
blueberries and some annuals soon. Ed built up the west side &
wants to fill in behind the railroad ties. I'm not anxious to get
small stuff in until he's done walking & hauling over it. When
the Forest Farm order gets here, I'll have to get busy.
Today I went to the Renn Fair in Moscow Idaho & ran into my
brother. He was demonstrating arrowhead knapping & helping anyone
who wanted to try one. I found a pretty piece of green chert, but
found it takes more hand strength than I have. He was really
good with the little kids.

beautiful sunny day, got a little sunburn on my nose
