RE: bermuda grass
Well...if your friend is really attached to the asparagus...she could go
out every day and pull any bermuda grass sprout that shows itself. Could
take a year or so. Probably if she had that much time it wouldn't have
taken over in the first place. The only time I've managed to defeat it
was in one small spot in my vegetable garden - I pulled everything I
could find and then didn't water there for a year. Doubt that would work
anywhere but here in the desert.
Round-up is the most practical answer.

Yes there may be no alternative to Roundup or equivalent. Roots can go
down
2-3 ft, it also spreads by runners as you know, any small piece left
will
sprout.
