Kitty,
Oh my, wish that mess was over. It's so dangerous. I think in the long run some good will come of it, for individuals at least, but right now it just makes me want to cry. I'll keep Sam in my prayers.
BTW, you should be getting a check for that subscription any day now. Finally got it in the mail this week.

No, I've never collected the saffron. I planted these about 16 years ago
and though they had died out long ago - they're in a terrible spot. They
made me smile though. One year when my nephew was in first grade, his class
was "studying" flowers. He came over and got some samples from my yard to
take to school. The teacher was amazed. She'd never heard of a
fall-blooming crocus. Of course, this made Sam feel very important.
Sam will be home for Thanksgiving, then off to Baghdad for a second
year-long tour. I'm more fearful for him this time around.

I had a great show with Saffron crocus here, too. Do you ever harvest the
saffron, Kitty? I had a few bloom last year and picked the stamens, but by
the time I decided to make saffron rice, I had misplaced them. They never
didshow up. Too busy this year, maybe next year. Judy B
