RE: Fire

Fire officials say embers from a pile of burning leaves were picked up
by strong winds and started a fire about 200 yards away in the Pokagon
State Park. The embers originated at a home on Lake James, where the
owner was burning leaves yesterday afternoon as wind speeds reached 40
miles per hour. Ten to 15 acres of the park burned and firefighters had
to cut down about three dozen trees. A Fire Department spokesman says
fighting the fire was dangerous due to the winds and hills in the park.
There were no injuries. 66 firefighters and 17 pieces of equipment were
called in the fight the fire at the park about 40 miles north of Fort
Wayne.

I know, 15 acres is nothing compared to 4000 acres in California. But
still, what is wrong with people? Yes, the costs have to do with the
labor of putting it out and cleaning it up. A lot of 100 yr old trees
also sustained damage. I can't locate the newspaper article, but at that
point in time they had not decided whether to charge the homeowner that
started it. I sure hope they do.

Although I am not personally familiar with that park.. most of Indiana's are
native plant designed.

The tree loss will be the problem, as erosion efforts will have to be
addressed first.... but at this time of the year, providing it stays cold,
the root systems of those effected should hold it back till spring. But if
someone in charge decides to wait till spring to do anything- you are in for
a real mess! Hum- is it flat land or hilly there?

The native plants will all return... actually next spring might be a good
year to see some of those previously hidden.

The cost I am sure, was for the manpower to put it out! It's a rough
decision on how to contain it with wild winds. Glad they got it under
control before the entire park went....

Are they billing the homeowner that started it?
