Wife number one and I had a cat named Orpheus--mostly white with a black patch over one eye and another under his nose--made him look like a feline impersonator of Adolph Hitler. His sister was named Calliope. When wife number one brought son number three home from the hospital--and all the neighbors were gathered around to ooh and aah--Orpheus brought his offering, a baby rabbit, into the meeting. Being the only male in this gaggle, it became my duty to catch a terminally frightened rabbit that was racing around the house pursued by a cat and abetted by several near-hysterical females.

The short answer is yes, they do know.

Thanks, Donna. Don't know about the Garden Fairy, but Squinty brought me a snake this morning. Into the living room. Took several minutes to corral it and get it outside. Then, around noon, when I was out watering the tomatoes, she had another one. So I turned the hose on her, she jumped up in the air, and the snake escaped. I hope this is the end of it, but somehow doubt that.
