PS: It's very easy to grow from cuttings. If you want some, I'll send them

We've had Callicarpa get 6-7 feet here in the understory. It sprawls, too--maybe wider than it is tall.On Nov 10, 2007, at 8:51 AM, Kitty wrote:Callicarpa americana grows 3 to 6 feet according to Kemper, never gets to more than 3 ft here as we are on the edge of hardiness. The only one I've seen here is in full sun. Most dogwoods are best w an eastern exposure here. Full Texas sun would be too much in most cases. Sounds like your hunter found some excellent specimens worth propagating.Kitty neIN, Zone 5----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrea Hodges" <andreah@hargray.com>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 7:23 AM Subject: Re: [CHAT] newest plantsTricia-keep in mind the Callicarpa will get quite large and is an understory plant. I always forget how big the really will be. I'd also still consider the dogwood as an understory. We've got some here that grow in full sun but they're never as pretty as those that get a tiny bit of late afternoon shade.I'm jealous of your Fothergilla. It's too hot for them here but I think they are so pretty.Good luck! I got these at the local nursery where the owner is a tree expert, he goes on seed hunting expeditions and has started some wonderful trees and shrubs. I bought one of his own named varieties of Ilex decidua "Cherry Berry" Possumhaw. I bought a one gallon very small one so this year it won't be very showy but next year I expect great things from it. He also let me have a great dogwood that he found the seeds from trees growing between Ft. Worth and Dallas out in full sun. I also bought a one gallon Chamaecyparis obtusa "Crippsii", a one gallon Callicarpa americana beautyberry, a one gallon Fothergilla major "Mt. Airy"bottlebrush. The Chamaecyparis he recommended as one of the hardiest in for our area. The Callicarpa is loaded with purple berries and the Fothergilla has wonderful fall color. Do any of you have any recommendations for where to plant them or what they need. He told me to remember that the dogwood is still a dogwood and would need water no matter where he got it from.Tricia zone 6b where fall is in full swing-------------------------------------------------------------------- -To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHATIsland Jim Southwest Florida 27.1 N, 82.4 W Hardiness Zone 10 Heat Zone 10 Sunset Zone 25 Minimum 30 F [-1 C] Maximum 100 F [38 C] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
