Re: newest plants

Definitely part shade where you are. I want to say they're native here again as understory trees/shrubs. Sounds like an awesome deal on the plants as they are Monrovia according to the page I looked at. Probably need something acidic worked into the soil. I suspect you have much more alkaline soil than we have. Ours is strictly acid with lots of leaf mold. That may make the difference you're looking for. Good luck!

Thank you Andrea... if it is too hot for them there it might be too hot for them here. I am guessing almost everything except for the holly would benefit from protection from the afternoon sun. We went to Stillwater, Ok, where our son is in college today. I always have to check out the nursery to see if they are having any sales. I found 3 nice Henry Garnet Sweet spires, in one gallon pots for 5.00 each. I have tried one before and moved it several times trying to find the right spot. I decided it was worth trying again... Any advice on them?
Thanks,

Tricia-keep in mind the Callicarpa will get quite large and is an understory plant. I always forget how big the really will be. I'd also still consider the dogwood as an understory. We've got some here that grow in full sun but they're never as pretty as those that get a tiny bit of late afternoon shade.

I'm jealous of your Fothergilla. It's too hot for them here but I think they are so pretty.

Good luck!

I went to help another girl buy a tree and I ended up with several good buys. I got these at the local nursery where the owner is a tree expert, he goes on seed hunting expeditions and has started some wonderful trees and shrubs. I bought one of his own named varieties of Ilex decidua "Cherry Berry" Possumhaw. I bought a one gallon very small one so this year it won't be very showy but next year I expect great things from it. He also let me have a great dogwood that he found the seeds from trees growing between Ft. Worth and Dallas out in full sun. I also bought a one gallon Chamaecyparis obtusa "Crippsii", a one gallon Callicarpa americana beautyberry, a one gallon Fothergilla major "Mt. Airy"bottlebrush. The Chamaecyparis he recommended as one of the hardiest in for our area. The Callicarpa is loaded with purple berries and the Fothergilla has wonderful fall color. Do any of you have any recommendations for where to plant them or what they need. He told me to remember that the dogwood is still a dogwood and would need water no matter where he got it from.
