Thanks for forwarding Scottie's post, Donna. I'm so glad she escaped Ike's wrath.

I thought you would all like to read the message Scottie sent. (See below)Scottie, I am so glad to hear you survived Ike without too much damage. Wouldlove to see you come back to gardenchat. Donna --- On Mon, 11/3/08, Scottie wrote: Donna, and All at Garden Chat,Thanks so much for thinking about us. We had very little damage either to the house or the boat. Gary boarded up all the windows and climbed up on the roof to trim all the limbs from the oak that hung over the house before the storm.Although many boats at our marina sank and others suffered much damage,Betelgeuse came through with flying colors. She lost her bimini, but it was 15 years old, and I'd been planning to make a new one for a while now, so I guess I'll have to actually get out the Sunbrella and the commercial sewingmachine and get to work.At the house, we lost two panels of fence on the east, and two on the south. The two on the east had been leaning badly for a year, and Gary and our neighbor replaced most of that fence, and they repaired/replaced the south fence, and split the cost on that since it was adjoining property. We had no power from Saturday morning until sometime Wednesday, and theypicked up the debris early the next week. The Library was closed for a week because we had no power and no internet connection (libraries are no longerfor books, but for computers), and Gary got power back at his job on the Thursday after the storm. So we had it really easy at our house, although some neighbors lost trees and there are a few blue roofs around. In Dickinson where I work, however, it's a different story. Many people lost their homes from flooding, many homes were heavily damaged by falling trees, a few still don't have their phones working. And right next to Galveston Bay in the communities of San Leon, Bacliff, Shore Acres, and Seabrook families areliving in tents and cars because their homes were totally destroyed by thestorm surge. FEMA hasn't been as kind to Texas as they were to New Orleans. I was in Galveston last week, and part of it look like a battle ground (or howI envision a battle ground -- I've never actually seen one). I was especially fortunate. I had planned a trip to Seattle to visit mysister, who I hadn't seen since 2002, and was supposed to leave on the Monday after the storm. That flight was cancelled, so I left on Tuesday and returned the following Sunday. I had a wonderful time enjoying the great Northwestern climate and wonderful reunion with Shellie and her family, returning just in time to get back to the Library and get the computer network up and runningagain. It's good to hear from you and to know that Garden Chat is still going strong. Maybe I'll sign up again!
