I think it's also the same reason all those stores are running Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day now. Get a little jump on your competitors and maybe the consumer will buy your stuff first. At some point it becomes silly. Is that why the new car models come out so early too? It's particularly important with some things like heirloom potatoes, garlic and specialty onions. Quite a few limited supply seeds sell out quickly, too.
