I remember seeing a table in a USDA publication [maybe the old Trees Yearbook] that gave the BTUs in cords of various woods. Highest was eucalyptus [blue gum], which is what we burned at the farm in California. Second highest was black oak. Don't remember any below those.

BEECHWOOD logs burn bright and clear If the logs are kept a year. CHESTNUT's only good, they say If for long it's laid away.
BIRCH and FIR logs burn too fast Blaze up bright and do not last.
ELM wood burns like a church yard mold Even the very flames are cold.
POPLAR gives a bitter smoke Fills your eyes and makes you choke.
APPLE wood will scent your room With an incense like perfume.
OAK and MAPLE if dry and old Keep away the winter cold.
But ASH wood wet and ASH wood dry a king shall warm his sippers by.
I just had to share this.... since we are talking about wood.

Hi Zem,
Not Gene, but a rick or face cord is a stack of wood 4 feet high by 8 feet
long by the typical stove length, either 12, 16, or 18 inches. It got cold
here last night, down into the 20's, brought in stuff, covered stuff, and
had some low priority stuff die. Today planted 300 tulips, they should be
real cool this spring.

Okay, Gene, what's a rick? I have always bought wood by the cord. Two
years ago it was $110/cord delivered and stacked. It's probably moredon't use enough to justify buying large amounts. My natural gas bill iscold. My
$7/mo (the minimum) during warm weather, and about $100/mo when it'shouse is old and drafty -- but then so am I. <LOL> zem zone 7 West TN
