Many of the state office buildings in Sacramento have rosemary hedges.

I've heard rosemary does so well in CA that some people practically consider it a weed. That's wild.

Well- I clearly live where lavendar thrives. I've abused mine in all sorts of manner and never killed one yet. My older one is 5 year now. I've pruned, moved, and even had that one squashed by the house painter. The other I moved in the middle of winter (January) last year after finishing my garden wall. It looks better now than ever. At least there is one thing I can always rely on here!

A workshop I attended this summer said to plant them in dirty rock or

plant to create more air circulation. Prune in early spring to promote
growth, in late June and in mid-September.

Well Pam, if it's any consolation, you make me feel better. I had 3
lavender some years ago that had dwindled and disappeared, and some posts
earlier this year got me excited about them again, so I planted 3 'lady'
lavender, none of which survived the summer. Not sure what I did (or
do) to them, but I'll try again next year. Agree, bummer...

Probably is more the wet than the cold. They are the toughest plants
though and as close to no maintenance as it gets down here at least. I
am delighted they are doing so nicely for you! I had to replace most of
my lavenders this year, wasn't a good year for them here. Bummer.

Most of the time they are, Pam. I have lost them in bad winters, but
I think more to winter wet than cold, actually. They do best with
really good drainage. While they obviously flourish in your full
sun, they will tolerate part shade.....at least in my garden.
That said about good drainage, the plant I kept longest was growing in a low-lying area that literally turns into a pond during heavy rain....go figure. It started out being higher up and kept elongating itself and rooting in until most of it was in the low spot. Lasted almost 10 years and then I lost it along with all the others I had. One was doing really great under a south-facing roof overhang until the roofers mangled it.
But, I know that it is 'iffy' and I need to take cuttings regularly...I just had neglected to do this and paid the consequences. Howsomever, that neglect and your generosity got me a bunch of really nice plants;-)
