I never thought of cannas and spider lilies as tropical. Guess that depends on where you live.

Have no intention of trying palms myself! In fact, if it was up to
me, I wouldn't have taros, canna, bananas, or spider lilies either.
DH loves the "tropical look", and I am running out of space in south,
east, and west facing windows.
