When I was a little girl my parents found a great horned owl that was too young to fly? or injured? (I don't really remember) standing in the ditch out in the woods. We brought him home & kept him in a big old fashioned bird cage. To feed him, Mom put on really heavy leather gloves & poked at him with scraps of raw meat until he'd snap at it. Once it was in his mouth, he'd swallow it. She made jesses for him & took him out in the yard several times each day to stretch his wings. She brought him to school for a brief show & tell to my classroom & my brother's. Once he got all his adult feathers & was strong enough that he was really pulling & flapping like he was flying, we all loaded up, took him back to the woods & cheered as he flew off into the forest. Then we got in the car & drove away so he wouldn't come looking for us to feed him. We had never heard of raptor rehab then (50s), but we wanted him to have a chance. Dad worked in the woods & always watched for him when he went that way. He would see an owl there infrequently at dusk & always hoped it was "our" owl. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jesse Bell" <justjess01@gmail.com>

Ohhh - my guess - probably 2-3 weeks to get him back up and flying. Right now he has to be force fed. He doesn't want to eat...but he HAS to - theyalmost eat their weight in food every day. Ya have to aggravate him enough to where he wants to snap at you and then you push the food into his mouth. We didn't make him eat last night because he was too stressed. Just water with a dropper. So, daughter called us. Looks like it was hit by a car - bad enough that it stunned him, and then while he was trying to recoup, something gota hold of his wing and broke it...two puncture marks. I guess it was toughenough to fight off whatever was trying to eat him. The break was not bad and it's fixable. One eye is bloody, from the pressure of being hit, butstill working and it will be O.K. again, eventually. Poor guy......when hegets better we'll release him back where he was. Such a beautiful bird. Ijust love them. On 9/29/08, Kitty <kmrsy@comcast.net> wrote:Our heroes! The blue jays came back and looked pleased w/ themselves.I filled up their peanut dish as a reward for saving my whole flock over here. I just wish y'all could have seen it. It was really something! I was coming around the cornerout back when a bird went by me w/ the hawk in hot pursuit. I stoppeddeadin my tracks and he veered off and flew into the big tree in the backcorner of the yard. That's the tree where my two pair of blue jays nest. Well, they started yelling at him and two of them dive bombed him from behind, hitting him in the back and the back of the head. They kept at it until he flew off. He made a beeline across the street to one of Pat's trees and all four of them followed him over there and now they are doing the same thingacross the street. It's noisy but hilarious. They're gonna drive himout of the neighborhood if it's the last thing they do. Talk about fearless! That would have made a great video. -- Pam Evans Kemp TX zone 8A --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT -- No virus found in this incoming message.
