Hmm. Unless their "very nice area" is a very small apartment, I think they're not trying hard enough. I hope they'll try the other options before dumping a cat.

I did suggest that and she said they had 3 litterboxes for 2 cats. But that's about as much of a solution as it seems most vets suggest. I did suggest they try Feliway and Litter Magnet and she said she'd pass that info on to her son. He is a doctor and his wife is an interior designer living in a very nice area, so I can imagine that the flooring being soiled is driving them nuts.

You might suggest that your friend try adding more litterboxes. I was told, 
1 per cat plus 1 extra. It seems to work, even though I trip over them.
Location seems to matter, too. The more private ones are used more.

There's also Feliway, which is supposed to make cats be more calm. Did
someone on this list mention using it? I've forgotten where I heard about it 
first. I know  that a lot of people on the Cats Forum use it.
Cat introductions aren't easy. E.T. cost us several screens and the screen 
door from trying to get at the other cats when they were on the screened
porch. After 4 months of trying to make introductions that way, we finally got harnesses for everyone and kept the squirt bottles handy. We knew we had to get him inside and acclimated before I went to Portland or run the risk of him crossing the street again and getting run over. No choice! And just 
as we were settling that dustup, the kitten arrived. I feel like I'm a
juggler in the circus.

The kitten spent his first night out of the crate last night, sleeping on
our bed with E.T. on one side, Diesel on the other, and the kitten mostly on 
my chest, purring away.

Daryl,
I really give you credit for going the extra mile for your pets.  I've
just received another email from a friend who says her son has to get rid 
of their younger cat because the older one doesn't like it, so it's not
using its box.  I do realize behavioral problems are a pain, but most of
the time they can be worked through.  Too many people think pets are
disposable.
