This is a youngster, about a yr old and from the description of the behavior, and compared to experiences I've had, I believe the vet is right that it is acting out because of the difficult relationship with the older cat.
The problems I'm having with Braveheart are more related with age but somewhat w behavior issues. When we were at the vet last week and I asked about the possibility of a geriatric profile, he deemed it not necessary at this time given his overall health being good. After I spent $16 for Litter Magnet5 days ago, but without having yet used it, he had made no mistakes. Hmmmm..... Then last night, after his 5th ear cleaning in as many days, a procedure he really truly hates and fears, he peed in that same spot in the hallway. To my mind, that's his way of fighting back. That's behavior. So I locked him out of the bedroom last night. That's my way of showing who's boss. He'll get the message.
My cats have nearly always used a single box without problems, even when I've had 5 cats, which meant cleaning it 3 times a day. I say nearly, because there have been times that dictated a need for a 2nd one for a period of time, but then we went back to one without a problem. I had to make the current box myself as it has to have a lowcut entry for BH to get into it, but high sidewalls for Slugger who shoots from the hip. A covered box won't fit under the sink and many cats won't use those anyway, especially if they've never used them b4. I bought a 24 wide by 15 high tote and cut the entry out, low for bH, but deep enough to hold a reasonable amount of litter. He does use it, just occasionally he doesn't. We're working on it.

Has the cat (s) been to the Vet to be checked out??? I recently had aproblem with my oldest cat, Pinkerton (the Flaksey reincarnation). She wasgoingright next to the litter box, but not in it. She even got to the point were she would go right in front of me, no matter where I was. The Vet said this was typical behavior when there is a kidney disorder. She had kidney stonesand is on medication now. Problem has gotten better, but not totally resolved yet. Vet said it would be like that until she is healthy. I have multiple cats, multiple litter boxes....I find that no matter how many litter boxes I have, the cats tend to have thier favorites, and often don't use a few despite the others becoming "full". Does anyone else find that??? It's the same type box, same litter, same area. But that's about as much of a solution as it seems most vets suggest. I didsuggest they try Feliway and Litter Magnet and she said she'd pass that info on to her son. He is a doctor and his wife is an interior designer livingin a very nice area, so I can imagine that the flooring being soiled is driving them nuts.**************Play online games for FREE at Games.com!
