Better it breaks the windshield than damage the other direction.  Some air bags 
have proven to be more dangerous to the driver than helpful.  They open with 
too much force and cause facial damage.

Sorry about your grandaughter, sounds like she'll be ok, though.  Remind her 
that Green means "go, IF it is clear".
