Hello Ceres,
Lots of different things went into the decision to construct the
greenhouse and the final look of the building when completed. It will also
have to serve several functions.
We have a natural depression in the hillside out here in exactly the
right location on the property to place a pit-style greenhouse. The
depression is approximately 4 to 6 feet deep and about 5o feet long and 20
wide. We age going to construct a house 48 long, by 24 wide. It will look in
outline like your garage... 8' walls, peaked roof. However, first four feet
of the walls will be concrete insulated with 4 inches of Styrofoam. Next 4
up will be frame with double 6 mil poly. Same with the framed roof. Southern
end with be rigid lexan and northern end will be barn board with double
doors that glide.Heat will be hot water heat in the floor. Only takes a 40
gallon tank to heat the building.
I will have to serve as germination house, holding over winter for the
plants that need some protection. Also place to pack and ship in bad
weather. Pot up in the late winter, early spring. Perhaps have small
meetings in the house during rainy weather when gardeners visit.
JoAn is giving hypertuffa classes today and tomorrow here, so have to be
brief and keep on the move this morning. Lots to do here......
