Your agent sounds like a real jerk. The UT Experiment Station in Jackson would be in real trouble without our working there. Have your check with Beth about his being able to do that? What about your local board of directors?

I worked in the UTK Trial Gardens yesterday. One of the volunteers is a
Doberman rescue. She said that the various animal rescue groups are trying
to help.

We are really having problems with our Master Gardener program. Two
counties, with greater population and interest, have historically shared
teaching and coordinating the program. Now, the new Knoxville Agent wants
to sharply divide the two, and he doesn't want to count work at the Trail
Garden as satisfying the volunteer requirements...he announced this at a
meeting in August to be effective this year!!!

Out of all the horror that was Katrina, the animal stories are the
hardest for me to hear about.  I guess I respond to their utter
helplessness in such a situation and the abject pain I know their loving
owners must be suffering.  This is certainly not to discount the agony
the human residents of that area have and are living through.  I've wept
more in the last weeks than I have since 9/11.

Just saw a report where an anethesiologist had stayed behind in an
evacuated
hospital and taken in over 50 dogs, countless cats and a couple
hamsters
from people that had to evacuate but were not allowed to take their
pets.  He
promised them that he would not leave until the animals  did.  He's been
there
for 5 days without food or water.  The other day  a chopper came to
rescue him
and the animals but crashed....all were fine, but  he had to wait
another day.
 Today they got them out.  All the animals  were doing well, the doctor
on
the other hand was exhausted and at his wits  end...but was the last
out, after
the animals were safe.

had swum 8  hrs with his dogs. He was crying so hard, apologizing to the
dogs for not  getting out sooner and putting them through this. At least
