Hosta Janet

Anyone grow this one? My book says it's difficult, which it hasn't been.
But it started going downhill as it was way overdue for division. So I dug
to divide and it has surprisingly shallow roots. Could that be particular
to this variety or something to do with the maple tree hogging the soil?
Other Hosta under the same tree have much longer roots.
