Hello Ceres,
I have had the arborvitae fern in my garden for two years now. Doing fine under an old cedar in a raised bed. We have not had a severe winter in a while, but I feel it would be worth the trial.
Asarum Callaway is a selection from A. shuttleworthii, if I remember correctly and that one is perfectly hardy well into zone 5. It has been through -20 way back when in my garden. Slow clumper for me. A southeastern US species.

The plant I found exciting in the 2 SL home gardens was Selaginella
(Arborvitae Fern) however it is hardy to zone 6 only. Another one was Asarum
'Callaway', hardy to zone 5. Do any of you grow these.
