Today was the blessing of the animals at our Episcopal church. I took Percy. The service was wonderful, as usual, and Percy likes his new St. Francis medal. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and there were so many animals there -- not only dogs and cats, but horses, too. There were even animal treats on the buffet table. I didn't get anything done in the yard because I was just tired, but I'm glad I had the day off.

I spent today cleaning the crabgrass and other grassy weeds out of one of two perennial beds. Resigned myself to almost completely redoing it because of the amount of digging necessary to remove the undesirables. Saved seeds from my Silene regiae because I am also spreading Preen. Transplanted two clumps of Alma Potschke aster. Hauled three wheelbarrows full to the burn pile. Planted 3 Kniphofia 'Red Flamingo', 5 Echinacea 'Rubinstern', and one Louisiana iris 'Joie de Vivre'. Now off to downtown Chicago to attend a non plant related :>( meeting. The fare on Amtrak will be the least expensive part of the three days. Although I am extremely tired from it all, today I tackled the front garden beds. I decided it was just too much of a mess to deal with and dug it all out under my bay window area. I had thought of saving some stuff, but after looking at it closely, realized there was a lot of damage from this summer. A guy from the older section of town was mulching leaves this morning, so I was able to get a few bags full to add to that section since now nothing is there. It will be bear for the winter and I will figure something out next spring. Off to take a nap and maybe later work some more.
