I wish I was your neighbor! We love home canned green beans, even more than fresh frozen. It's work, but worth it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna" <gossiper@sbcglobal.net>

I think it is the year for beans..... I planted the same amount I do yearly which is usually just enough for us. This year I have frozen more than wewill use.... along with trying a few recipes of other types. Friends, familyand neighbors run when they see me with a grocery sack. Pickles are another item producing. Made tons of dill pickles, freezer pickles, and there are still some in the fridge and on the vines....Carrot did well this year too. Thinking the ground is finally good enough as they are long and wide. Haven't picked the turnips yet... but look to be readysoon.Peppers are about the same as always. Not overbearing, but enough to eat andfreeze. Tomatoes on the other hand are just barely producing... the radishes never did.... nor the sweet corn. Not sure what the problem was with those this year. My brother sent us the seeds [out-of-date Burpee's]; he grows them in 7-gallon nursery pots; his whole vegetable garden is container grown. We have three plants, which have provided us with lots and lots of beans and no sign of stopping. I'd be happy to send you some seeds--they're old but still seem to germinate. I value the shade & the nuts, but tomatoes don't do well at all around them and I suspect them in my repeated failure to grow beans & peas the last few years. If I could convince Ed to try raised beds, I think I could compost the weeds, grape & cherry leaves to topdress every year &eventuallyget some good garden soil. He stubborn & it doesn't feel like a fight I want, so I grow flowers & put my tomato plant in a pot. ----- Original Message ----- From: "james singer"<islandjim1@comcast.net> To: "Garden Chat" <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Sunday, September 07, 2008 4:47 PM Subject: [CHAT] WeekendToday is my sister's birthday. When I asked her what she wanted for her B-Day, she said one of the blueberries we have decided to plant. So that's what I got her and we planted it today. A few days ago, I picked up a box-load of purple iris rhizomes [who knows what cultivar] on freecycle. We planted some of them today, also. Then I extended the micro-irrigation to a new area and began watering there so we can plant the rest of the iris and get the site ready to add another cherry tree. It's also the areawhere we want to plant the saffron crocus later this month. Zucchini is beginning to hit its stride. We have one bush, which is now producing 2-3 fruits a day. I think that's half a bush toomany, but what are you gonna do. Yellow straight necks--we have three bushes, which is probably one too many--are also giving us 3-4 nice small fruits a day. For a slap-dash garden, it's been a good year so far, mostly because I've learned a lot.
