Thanks. I didn't think I had much, but took a bucket out & started picking. It was so hot (record for the date 95F)& dry that day, several things just shriveled up before they could be judged. My Cimicifuga brunette foliage was spectacular & 2 ferns & small bamboo were good but they just curled up to dry twigs on entry day. Several of my roses suffeed from the heat. I could have entered my lily the day of judging but forgot to cut another & got a blue anyway. I like entering unusual stuff like hosta foliage & flowers, perennial geranium, whatever looks good on entry day. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Evans" <gardenqueen@gmail.com>

One local fair is in the spring & I'd like to enter therenext year. I'm really getting into knit & crochet again. My garden issuffering because I'm spending my spare time with my yarn. I need to get out & get the weeds one last time before it's too cold. One neighbor has a weed patch right by my carport & right now it's blowing thistle, bindweed & other weed seeds onto my gravel path. Grrrr. Very discouraging. The thistles comeright through the ground covercloth under the path. Nez Perce Co Fair was last week. I entered 55 in Flower Dept & got 41ribbons. Note on Rosa "The Fairy" said it would have been best of class if it had foliage. It was a stem that grew without foliage on it at all, just flowers & buds, so I was happy. I got a big prize with this rose a few yearsago, too.----- Original Message ----- From: "james singer" <islandjim1@comcast.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, September 22, 2008 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Happy equinox! I don't know what we'll do. I'm waiting for a clue from someone aboutwhat we should be doing. It's beginning to rain two-three times a weeknow--not big rains, more like persistent showers. So I think we're heading into the monsoon season. This last week we had end-of-summer colds here so didn't feel like doing much of anything, except the saffron crocus bulbsarrived and we got those planted. I did some cleanup this weekend out front. I noticed the pyracantha by theoffice window had gotten too big so I went out with my loppers and littlesaw.I have enjoyed watching the birds eat its berries every winter but it'saplant in the wrong place, and too much work to keep pruning it back every year. So I decided to take it down to about 2 ft high, if it comes backfine,if it doesn't oh well. Those things are pretty thorny I got punctured a couple times through my gloves. I got about > of it but the dumpster wasoverflowing, so I'll have to get the rest later. Tried using my leaf-floweras a vacuum and I think it will work, although not incredibly effective.I need a longer extension cord to get the worst areas. And I shoveled 12wheelbarrows full of, ummm, stuff out of the sheep pens, that was prettytiring. I could use some positive thoughts for our cat Punkin. She got out of thehouse somehow on Saturday afternoon (we think), and we didn't notice hermissing until this morning. She is not much of a lap cat so it wasn't unusualfor her not to be underfoot, I feel bad though. It isn't a good sign thatshe isn't wailing at the front door to come in, a little early to give up hope but I am fretting.
