Re: plant combinations
Carolyn:
In about two weeks I'll have this combination: the emerging purple-red
foliage of a small Japanese maple ('atropurpurea' I think), underplanted
with the peach-orange tulip 'Apricot Beauty' and single early purple
tulips (I'd have to look up the name), plus a grouping of golden-leaved
Milium effusum 'Aureum'. This is a sunny spot right now but it will be very
shady in a month or so (I'll yank out the tulips when they're finished).
I've done this area before with 'Princess Irene' tulips (orange with purple
flames) and once (when a company sent me the wrong tulips by accident)
bright red ones. They all looked great with the maple and the yellow grass.
For a pot, in the summer, in pretty heavy shade, I intend to combine
Begonia sutherlandii, with tangerine flowers, with a dark purple coleus
that's supposed to keep its color in shade, and chartreuse-leaved ivy.
There is a book called "Creating Contrast with Dark Plants," by Freya
Martin, one of those maddening books you realize too late is British and
not American. It has a (too small, in my opinion) section on suggested
designs. I can tell you some later if you like.
