Re: Re Mycorrhizal Fungi and Mycorrhiza
Can't say I agree. I've talked to Dr. Robert Linderman at Oregon State U,
and have seen his trials. I've seen results from several other people.
I've used the fungi in my own garden in replicated trials, and have seen the
results. In potatoes (for example), plants treated with the fungi had more
uniform, useable size potatoes that were mature as much as three weeks ahead
of untreated ones (which had more "peas and pumpkins" in the hills). In
Ribes, an untreated Jostaberry was planted 20 feet from a treated one. When
I dug the untreated one, it mainly had the central, large roots and some
smaller roots. The treated plant had a solid mass of fine roots that looked
like a clump of sod. All of these were in a silt loam soil that was quite
decent to start with.
Perhaps the results would be different in other situations, but with the
kind of results I got, I would surely feel it was worthwhile to TRY the
fungi.
I grant that a really well cared for garden with a lot of organic matter
might not show as much of an effect with the fungi as it would in other
places, but we are trying to reach a diverse audience and if we don't
encourage them to try, they may never know if they could have done better
with the fungi or not.
