Title: Re: [GWL]: Re Mycorrhizal Fungi and Mycorrhiza
The main point here is that the Ericoid types have not been cultured and offered for sale, as have the other types. So while we, as writers, can encourage the average gardener to use the commercially available types, the tidbit to pass along to them in this instance is there isn't anything to use on their ericaceous plants and the commercial cultures have no value since they aren't compatible. ---------- From: springtown@netstep.net To: Gardenwriters@topica.com Subject: Re: [GWL]: Re Mycorrhizal Fungi and Mycorrhiza Date: Tue, Apr 2, 2002, 4:23 PM Ericacea most assuredly do form a mycorrhizal association, called the ericoid type which is an endomycorrhiza (with hyphae actually entering cells) but different from the vesicular-arbuscular type of endomycorrhiza or, of course, ectomycorrhiza (where hyphae stay outside of cells). The fungi causing ericoid mycorrhizae have been isolated, but not cultured in the absence of host plants. For my doctoral dissertation, I studied, among other things, the effect of ericoid mycorrhizae on blueberry. The effect was nonsignificant and plants became readily infected without deliberate inoculation. In Australia, however, researchers found dramatic benefit from inoculations with ericoid fungi, probably because no blueberries are native there. ========================================================== Extra!
