RE: Mycorrhiza -- here is a Q&A what we put out for PRO-MIX

Q & A about PRO-MIX with MycoriseR
1. What is MycoriseR?
Plants, soil, and microorganisms such as fungi are interwoven in the web
of life. One type of fungi called mycorrhizae work in harmony with plant
roots. Together roots and mycorrhizae naturally participate in the
mutually beneficial partnership of symbiosis. Premier Horticulture and
Premier Tech, the industry leader in mycorrhizal research and soilless
products, have registered these plant enhancers as MycoriseR and has
been offering it exclusively in professional mixes for more than five
years.

2. How does it work with the plant?
Mycorrhizae become extensions of a plant's roots, sending out filaments
(hyphae) that gather additional nutrients and water, which the plant
uses. In many cases, mycorrhizae also increase phosphorous available to
a plant, which improves flowering and fruiting. Biologically, plants are
healthier, bigger, and more prolific when mycorrhizae colonize their
roots.

PRO-MIXR incorporates a special isolate of endomycorrhizal fungi, VAM
(vesicular- arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi), that forms symbiotic
relationships with more than 90 percent of plant families. VAM is
beneficial to most vegetables, floral and herbaceous plants, grasses,
shrubs, and many trees.

PRO-MIXR uses a specific mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus intraradices, that's
best suited for horticultural and agricultural applications.

3. Why is this great news for the home gardener and weekend landscaper?
This cutting edge "growth enhancer" is now available mixed in a bag of
planting and growing mix that's convenient to use. PRO-MIXR Vegetable
and Flower Bed Mix is the only product available to the home gardener
and weekend hobbyist.

4. If these beneficial fungi are natural, aren't they already in my
soil?
That depends on the soil. If your garden has sufficient humus, compost,
organic matter and mulch with plants at their peak, beneficial organisms
are likely in abundance. A healthy, established garden may have from 15
to 20 percent organic material, which encourages good microbial
activity.

5. Do all yards need this "Secret Agent"?
If your garden or yard has been repeatedly tilled, over-fertilized, or
treated often with pesticides, it is most likely void of natural plant
enhancers. Mycorrhizae are delicate organisms that need healthy,
undisturbed living conditions. For worn-out or poor soil, adding
PRO-MIXR Vegetable and Flower Bed Mix (with MycoriseR) inside when you
plant vegetables, annuals, perennials, and shrubs, will reintroduce the
beneficial organisms and organics that feed them.

Soils in new housing developments are usually barren, severely
compacted, and depleted of organic material. Beneficial mycorrhizae
aren't likely to be alive. Be sure to use PRO-MIXR Vegetable and Flower
Bed Mix (with MycoriseR) when you start new shrub and flower beds or
your vegetable garden.

6. Does using PRO-MIXR Vegetable and Flower Bed Mix mean I shouldn't
use fertilizer or pesticides?
First, you won't have to use as much fertilizer or pesticide on healthy
plants supported by MycoriseR found in the mix. They'll be stronger and
more disease resistant from getting additional nutrients and water from
the MycoriseR filaments that enhance the roots.

7. What type of fertilizer work best with the MycoriseR?
Most pesticides are compatible with mycorrhizal fungi, but the fungi can
suffer from excessive phosphorus. Use fertilizers low in phosphorus,
such as 20-10-20, 15-5-15 or simply use half of what you normally use. .

8. Will PRO-MIXR Vegetable and Flower Bed Mix work on all plants?
MycoriseR is a specific type of endomycorrhizal fungi that supports
about 90 percent of plants in the world. Many of these plants are
flowers, vegetables, trees, and shrubs that we are commonly familiar.
PRO-MIXR Vegetable and Flower Bed Mix is formulated with an
endomycorrhizal fungus that is compatible with the largest number of
plants in horticultural and agricultural use. It does not work with
Ericaceous plants, conifers, birch, beech, oak, and some woody plants.
These plants benefit from another class of beneficial fungi called
ectomycorrhiza. For more information, contact your local Garden center
for a list of plants that benefit from PRO-MIX Vegetable and Flower
Bed Mix with MycoriseR.

I've been attempting to follow this discussion because it sounds
fascinating
but I don't understand half of it. That's partly because I didn't do
well
in science in school and partly because I read my morning email before
the
contacts go in while I drink the first caffeine of the day. Is there a
"Mycorrhiza For Dummies?"
