I haven't looked at the archives themselves, but the problem described
usually results from letters that are posted in HTML. People use colored
letters, fancy backgrounds, etc. and when the letters go into the archives,
they are translated into plain text, but all the computer code for the fancy
HTML version is left in. Depending on the letter, it may be inserted in the
letter, or a duplicate of the letter, with all the code added, is included
with the plain text version.
In short, the best way to prevent it is for YOU, the list members, to
set your mail programs (outgoing letters, at least) to PLAIN TEXT. That
will keep the archives relatively uncluttered.
