Re: rototilling
I might be way out in left field, but wasn't Mr. Rodale advocating methods
which had been taught to starving farmers in India by an Englishman, and were
they not largely based on smothering weeds between rows and using manures of
any age? the soils which were being farmed were very similar to the "Georgia
red clay" of many lamentations.
FYI Mike Dirr thinks his red clay is fine, because he understands how to
handle it. Certainly citizen groups are welcome and needed, but I wonder if
the Peace Corps didn't have access to academic researchers for info about
recommended methods for wherever they were working. Certainly the way
ornamental plants are handled in the leafy green($) suburbs of Boston is
different from Bosnia or Tasmania, or Kenya, but shouldn't some science guide
our use of available materials to grow food? People are very fond of doing
what seemed like a good idea to grand dad even when it doesn't hold up next
to modifications based on 20th century science.
I have seen agronomists with graduate degrees challenged by some sites within
30 minute drive of Beacon Hill.
I am not advocating strict adherence to a protocol, just making some effort
to understand the conditions plus the possibilities for modifications, before
taking action.
