Drip Irrigation
I disagree with Lee's writing off soaker hose as not any good. Yes, it can
be vulnerable to pressure problems if the person doesn't use it properly,
but if used properly it is much much easier than any emitter system. One
very important point to make in this whole discussion is that any drip
irrigation system is vulnerable to the gardener's forgetting it is there and
cutting the system in two with a spade in order to dig a hole to plant a new
perennial or something. One of the reasons I use soaker hose is that it is
cheap so every year or two when I forget and cut a line, it is no biggie.
Drip irrigation should be covered with mulch so it becomes invisible to the
gardener and after a year, the gardener can forget that it is there. I've
used soaker hoses in my vegetable and perennial beds for 15 years and find
them much easier to work with than the emitter systems. I favor the emitter
systems for permanent installations around shrubs and permanent perennials
that are spread out a bit and are not so vulnerable to being cut by a shovel
or spade. For beds of plants, the soaker hose is the best for the average
gardener in my view. I've worked with three different drip systems over the
years to test them and while they all work pretty much as advertised, I find
them to be more trouble than they are worth.
