Okay, I'll bite, who is P. Allen Smith? And why is he able to do this
and not you? Can't you promote a product too?

I thought I'd share some news with the list.  I've been garden editor
at
Woman's Day since 1996.  They have now entered into a branding
agreement
with P. Allen Smith and the Weather Channel for him to write all their
garden material for the next 18 months.  So....if any of you have sent
queries off, they are NOT buying.

This seems to be a trend.  I was told that P. Allen Smith will provide
a
monthly column with basics of gardening, much like his 90-second
Weather
Channel spots.  The reason for this change is the lack of interest
among
readers for gardening material.  Smith will be touting products in his
monthly column such as seed mats, instant herb gardens, t-shirts, etc. 
The
branding of retail products makes more money for the magazine, and
readers
respond better to products for sale than straight gardening
information.

On a personal note, my name will be off the masthead after July 1.
