I'm not contesting whether or not Roundup is safe to use. I don't use any pesticides at all myself. But maybe in special cases, it should be considered. One of HortResources member scientists, Norm Helie, wrote on Round-Up and its efficacy in eliminating Poison Ivy by using it in WEAK doses. I'm putting the article in below.

Fran and others,
Since Lon is allowing this gardening related topic to continue (I'm sure in the hope that we will all be better garden writers for it), I'll add a practical suggestion regarding the use of glyphosates based on my nursery experience with the product. The article you included almost made the connection between dormancy and fertilizer but didn't put 2 and 2 together. You should add fertilizer to the herbicide tank to stimulate growth. Glyphosate will not work on plants that are dormant due to drought or cold. Fertilizer will lower pH of the tank water, and the water with fertilizer will stimulate some growth, which then will absorb the glyphosate. Only actively growing plants will be effected by glyphosate, and the fertilizer helps that to happen.
