EPA to Review Pesticides' Effects in California
Under a settlement with three California environmental groups, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will review the effects
of common pesticides on endangered salmon and woodland plants.
Targeted are some of the most common pesticides registered by the
EPA, including chlorpyrifos, diazinon, atrazine, Roundup, and 2,4-D.
The EPA will also examine how the pesticides are used in forestry,
on fruit, nut, nursery and forage crops, and on highway and utility
rights of way and irrigation canals.(ENS, 22 April, 2002)

Historical Pine Hoped To Be Australia's New Christmas Tree
A rare wollemi pine has been planted at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical
Gardens.The wollemi pine was discovered in the Wollemi National Park
in New South Wales in 1994 and is a direct descendent of pines which
existed 260 million years ago.The Botanical Gardens in Sydney in
conjunction with a commercial group have been growing wollemi pines

Jute Revival On The Horizon.
Bangladeshi scientists and officials are hoping a recent discovery
will lead to a return to glory for the country's top cash crop –
jute. Scientists at the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute said
last week they have developed a higher yielding, better quality
jute that they are calling the "Tossa" variety.

A Somali grandmother who has fought to preserve her country's

recently recognised by the Goldman Environmental Foundation. The
Goldman prize, awarded annually to grass-roots activists from six
regions across the globe, is often termed the Nobel prize of the

Effects of Forest Fragmentation on Birds Vary
Researchers have discovered why some forest nesting birds thrive and
others decline when forests are fragmented by agriculture and
development. For much of the last ten years, many migratory birds
in the U.S. have appeared to be in trouble. Forest fragmentation,
a widespread phenomenon, seems to be causing declines among some

First Global Guidelines Adopted on Genetic Resources
Ministers left The Hague today after a two week meeting that charts
a course for global action on biological diversity through 2010.
Representatives of 166 countries agreed detailed guidelines on
access to genetic resources and benefit sharing, an international
work program on forests, and guiding principles on combating
alien invasive species. The guidelines are voluntary.

Termites Government scientists are developing a new weapon against
the Formosan subterranean termite, a highly destructive species
that has caused millions of dollars in damage to houses and trees

to their natural enemies, certain species of bacteria or fungi,
