Larry,
Thought you'd like to know -- Jim and I bought a Canon PowerShot G2 with 4 megapixels. He's taken to it like a duck to water -- sat down and read the "fast start" section of the booklet and started snapping. Then he showed me how to use it and I started using it too.
We've already gotten some really great shots for his campaign literature, and as soon as the trees leaf out a little, we're taking to the dirt roads to get some photographs of our rural area for mailers later in the election season. Meanwhile, I'm going to give it a whirl on close-ups of the spring ephemerals, and play around with depth of field and artistic effects a bit. Guess I'd better read the book too, especially since, for campaign purposes, I'll be the one clicking and he'll be the one posing.
He's even mastered the computer program that goes with the camera already! Oh, envy! He did it with a little fiddling around -- I'm taking the free class that the shop is offering next month -- takes me longer to understand programs. I'll learn eventually, but I'm a lot slower then he is on the technical stuff. (But, then, that's to be expected -- he's a retired Air Force colonel and an engineer; I'm an indexer and deal with words. He makes almost instantaneous decisions (in an airplane, if you don't make fast decisions, you may, as they say, "buy the farm"!); I make slow, well-researched decisions, after pondering the point for long hours (I wouldn't last long as a pilot!). He speeds me up when I'm pondering too long -- and I slow him down when he's about to rush in without thoroughly checking out the situation.
We went to a really fine camera show about 1/2 hour from us -- the one I've dealt with for many years -- and looked at about half a dozen cameras, Canons, Nikons, and Olympus, ranging from a low of 3 megapixels to this one at 4. The deciding factors were the diopter (spelling?) adjustments that this one can make (I can actually see what I'm photographing with this one) and the "feel" in the hand. This camera has a nice, solid feel -- not too small and lightweight -- just a good, solid, Canon feel.
I think I'm going to love this camera! And thanks so much for your suggestions and help. It really was tempting to go to the local discount store and just buy one, but I instinctively knew (and you confirmed) that, in the end, dealing with a really good camera store was the best way to make a wise purchase we'd be happy with for a long time to come.
Thanks again,
Lina Burton
