Obviously, the photographers on the list are going to have more information about this, but here's my experience. When my new book (Big Ideas for Northwest Small Gardens, Sasquatch Books, 2003) was about to go to the printer, the publisher wanted to know if he could use the photo of me that appears along with my newspaper feature each week (for more instant recognition by gardeners). Because it was taken by one of the newspaper staff photographers, the book publisher had to get special permission from the newspaper publisher.
Since then, I have had some publicity photos taken. I paid this independent photographer to take them, and now they are mine to use whenever and wherever I please. She never asked for credit. Should I list her name? I have replaced my newspaper photo with one of hers (new hair length, you know how it goes); but even though it's in the newspaper, I will never again have to go through those hoops to use it elsewhere. And I'll have the same instant recognition (and the same comment from friends, too, probably: "It makes your hair look gray." Gee, I wonder why...).
