Title: Invasive Species - Congressional Hearing Today
This is a shortened version of a posting to another list.
The newly formed National Environmental Coalition on Invasive Species is
representing the environmental community today at a hearing on invasive
species being held by two subcommittees of the House Resources Committee.
All eleven member organizations have endorsed the statement, which is
attached....
Other witnesses at the hearing include the Departments of Agricuture,
Commerce, and Interior; the Corps of Engineers; National Cattlemens Beef
Association, National Association of State Foresters, and several
agricultural groups. Two speakers -- one from the seed trade, a second
from a property-rights group -- are also scheduled to testify; (they are expected to) raise objections to a stronger governmental effort to address invasive
species.
The hearing is sponsored by two subcommittees: that for Fisheries
Conservation, Wildlife, and Oceans; and for National Parks, Recreation and
Public Lands.
The hearing begins at 1 PM eastern time; those with appropriate computer
technologies can listen to the hearing via Live Audio on the internet:
http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/audio.htm then click on the link to the
Morris K. Udall Hearing Room, which is Room 1324.
The participating environmental organizations hope this hearing will lead to
productive Congressional action, including reauthorization of the National
Aquatic Invasive Species Act and adoption of other bills that would promote
greater and more coordinated responses to invasive species....
I have to say that I do not have a full underestanding of the
leglislative background to this, far from it. But I'm astonished that
there's no representation from the nursery trade, garden retailers,
the American Horticultural Society or anyone representing gardeners
or the garden industry.
