Regarding Roundup and aquatic uses...it seems that many people on this list who have been chiming in are not even vaguely aware of how this product is regulated regarding its use in and around wetlands. For a moment, let's not even consider the effects of the herbicide...just the regulations. If a pesticide is used contrary to the label is a violation of Federal and in most cases State laws. Roundup in it's retail formulation sold under that trade name is not permitted to be used in wetlands and the label clearly states that.
In NY, as in most other states, Glyphosphate is available in a formulation for use on certain, not all, weeds and invasive species that might be found in wetlands and wetland buffers. This product is not available for retail (homeowner) use in any state, not one. It is therefore considered a 'restricted' pesticide and many states require written records of how much is used and when it is used as a specific location. It can only be used by a certified commercial pesticide applicator and in many cases a permit must first be obtained from the appropriate state agency.
Now...if garden writers really want to do the environment a service you should inform your readers that under no circumstances should Roundup be used in or near any wetlands or wetland buffer. If you don't know what a wetland is or what wetlands buffers are then you need to do your research. These are critical environmental areas that are rapidly disappearing and as they do water contamination, loss of wildlife and enhanced flooding occur.
Oh, I might add that I'm the Vice Chairman of the Town of Bedford Wetlands Commission. One of my responsibilities is to coordinate enforcement with our enforcement officers. Last year I was driving down a local road and there was a homeowner spraying Roundup RTU over his 'swamp' to get rid of the 'weeds' (skunk cabbage).
