Is it possible to avoid applying around water?

Is it possible to avoid applying around water? My local hardware store does
not carry the "aquatic approved" version.  And in my region, New England, a
land of plentiful lakes and ponds, and sandy slopes that drain well, rainfall
exceeds 40 inches per year. In fact, when rainfall is less than 1 inch per week
in growing season, the recommendation is to irrigate. Rain and sprinkler
irrigation produce puddling and runoff. Runoff leads to you know what.

Roundup residue, despite industry claims, remains active in the soil for
months. Even if not used directly over open water (the label does not recommend
this due to its lethal effects on fish), it seems to me that Roundup will seep
through ground water channels with detrimental effects on wildlife, e.g.
earthworms, frogs, fish, and others.

The Pittsburgh study, with whatever flaws will be exposed, is useful as a
reminder of the lethal effects of (convenient) chemical solutions that many
people would prefer to remain hidden under the rug and not have to deal with.

Then there is the matter of agricultural scale use and the pesky question of
adverse health effects on agricultural workers....
