RE: ROUND-UP and Toads in Jeff's lawn

Jeff

There are lots of ways to kill grass besides Roundup. It all depends on how large the area is and what your goals are: do you intend sodding in a putting-green type lawn; do you intend going with a meadow; will you be wanting to seed in—either grass or meadow; what are the ‘weeds’ that are there, and so on. I would think long and hard before I blanket sprayed a large area—especially if your management practices have fostered toads. I’d be pleased to talk about this more if you’re interested.

Wild Ones has a couple of nice handbooks on how to go about dealing lawn. Check out our website: www.for-wild.org. I’d also take a look at Carole Rubin’s books—she has two out: How to get your lawn and garden off drugs, and How to get your lawn off grass.

Jeff, I think it all boils down to which you value most: toads or grass.

Id rather not kill my toads, but maybe I need to kill my grass for a one time renovation; never needing to use RoundUp on the lawn again.  Any suggestions?
