Peonies can indeed self sow. Most of us cut our peonies back so they do not
set seed.
Peonies take one year to germinate, one year to put top foliage on and
several more years to flower. I am growing quite a few peonies from seed. I
have some seeds in the ground but only one has shown top growth and that was
last summer. I do not know if more will show top growth this year.
I also have numerous peony seeds in pots. I do not know what they are
crossed with but here are the parents. They are:
Paeonia species - rose - seed sown October 21, 2004.
Peony - unknown
Tree Peony
Paeonia rockii IR - seed winter sown on January 9, 2005.
Paeonia 'White Cap' - I believe this seed has been through two, maybe three
winters.
Paeonia officinalis ssp. villosa - pink - I believe this seed has been
through two, maybe three winters.
Paeonia mascula Sicily (white flowers) - seed winter sown on January 9,
2005.
Paeonia ostii 'Fen Dan Bei' - seed winter sown on January 9, 2005.
Paeonia anomala - red - seed sown in the winter of 2003.
Paeonia banatica - seed sown January 9, 2005.
Paeonia delavayii - seed sown January 9, 2005.
Paeonia lithophila - seed sown January 9, 2005.
Paeonia officinalis Monte Baldo - seed sown in the winter of 2003.
Paeonia tenuifolia EM - seed sown January 9, 2005.
Paeonia triternata McLewin - seed sown January 9, 2005.
All of these are showing top growth now. I had them in my heated greenhouse
and have just moved them to my unheated greenhouse.
