Re: Picking Your Collective Brain

Ants are amazing! I lived in Provence for a few years and the water cistern--like a big pool- had a colony of red ants nearby...they got flooded once and I saw them join together to form islands to float off the eggs...specks of white others were carrying on their heads, as far as I could make out...amazing~!

I couldn't believe my eyes, but I saw two ants carrying one item too large for one ant to carry, a few years ago. They were carrying the item (I didn't know what it was) like two humans would carry a board. I was thunderstruck, but my friend wanted to continue our journey, alas. Margaret L

That's a thought...can they carry seeds that big that distance?
"self sow" is probably not the right way to describe what happens.....maybe birds spread the seeds......the bed that has the most peonies hadn't been deadheaded for ever...been lefgt wild for maybe 15 years.. bringing it back was a nightmare...lily of the valley had become a weed and it's deep rooted and hard to eradicate...
The funny part is all the years I lived in DC I tried to grow lily of the valley, peonies, ferns and struggled with pachysandra ground cover that kept dying...the invasives here are lily of the valley, ferns, peonies, pachysandra
As I said in the introduction to Feast of Flowers, (Houghton Mifflin) life has a way of giving you what you very much want.
