When we came here, and bought our house, we told the realtor
that the first criteria was 'Not subject to a Homeowner's
Association or anything similar.'
The realtor probably thought that was funny: this is a
*very* rural area and there aren't any such things here, to
the best of my knowledge. But we weren't taking any
chances.
Our second criteria was 'Flat or gently sloping land, usable
for a garden'. And the third: 'Room for two large dogs to
run and play.' The fourth: 'DSL or cable Internet access
available.' (My husband was hoping to get telecommuting work
at that time - he's a programmer. Didn't happen because all
the telecommuting work went abroad about then.)
After all those, then came the actual house..... Yes, we do
have a house. <g> It's a very small one (570 sf), but it's
quite nice. It works for us.
