You're correct about odd. The original intent of "herb of the year" was
actually to expose the public to some of the odder plants but it never played
out that way. As for criteria? I truly think it was someone's favorite plant
on the committee. Part of the selection was for plants with multiple
uses.....rosemary, sage, thyme, calendula (2008). But they've thrown in things like
bronze fennel (the first one) and echinacea (not a lot of recipes out there
for that one).
The story of the "Herb of the Year" is rather strange. This was an idea of
The International Herb Association several years ago when the group was
actually viable. People on the original committee included Dr. Art Tucker and
Chuck Voigt at the University of IL in Champaign. They selected them 10 years
out. As the group deteriorated (I think there must be all of 15 members left)
they did little to promote the program while I and the Herb Society of
America picked it up. I'm hoping that when the 10 years is up (2010) I can get
them to release the program to me.
And I must be the only one lemon balm does not run rampant with.....always
one plant....never gets too crazy as opposed to my wild geranium plants that
I'm constantly digging up
