Oregon pear marketing company to sell rose business

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- Harry & David Holdings Inc. says it has agreed to
sell its Jackson & Perkins rose business to two groups for a total of
$49 million.
Harry & David, which sells pears and other produce and gifts through
catalogs and the Internet, said it decided the rose operation didn't
mesh with the business that traces its roots to a Medford-area pear
orchard planted in 1886. Brothers Harry and David Holmes launched the
brand in 1934.
"Having determined that it did not fit with our long-term goals, we are
pleased that this divestiture will allow us to focus on our core
businesses and further strengthen our financial position," President
and CEO Bill Williams said in a statement Monday.
Harry & David said the Jackson & Perkins brand and business operations,
catalog and Web site would be sold to an investment group led by Donald
and Glenda Hachenberger, who own several horticultural businesses.
About 3,200 acres in Wasco, Calif., buildings and equipment are to go
to a private investment group in California, the company said.
The transactions are expected to close by June 30.
