I side with Fran and think they are environmentally draining. Although they're good for emergency landings for small airplanes.

I felt the same way.
Much of what was said was simply not true, at least for California
and other dry climates. They were talking about the advantages of
lawn as compared to other plants when the fact is, lawns take more
water, more care, and more resources than any other plant in the garden.
I was very disappointed.
