Re: now recycled tires

I believe the offending substance in chopped-up tires is carbon black, which acts as a UV blocker to prevent tires from drying out and becoming brittle while they're on your car. We'd be better off burning old tires in electrical generating plants, not mulching them or stockpiling them by the millions so they can become raging, inextinguishable toxic infernos, not making reefs and pretending they don't pollute the water. Burning them as fuel apparently can be done cleanly. See John McPhee, "Duty of Care," in his collection, "Irons in the Fire."

It was used under swings and climbing equipment in a park playground
here a few years ago and was swiftly removed when the kids came home
filthy. Whatever is in the old tires rubs off on skin and clothes.
Ugh.
