Mary Ann,

If at all possible, go to the University of California, Santa Cruz's  
Arboretum. Beautiful drive over the Santa Cruz mountains, about 40  
minutes or so from San Jose. You will see the largest collection of  
Southern Hemisphere plants in the United States, and one of the  
largest anywhere. Acres of plants from Australia, New Zealand, South  
Africa, as well as California natives. Great collection of proteas.
