Writer/blogger invitation
Hi. You're all invited to join the www.GreentheGrounds.org national media campaign encouraging our First Families - in the White House and governors' mansions - to adopt more sustainable landscaping practices. The impetus for the campaign was seeing the intense media focus on the Obamas' veg garden and wishing there was at least SOME focus on the other changes needed there and on other high-visibility official residences - stormwater management that protects the Bay, getting the lawn and Rose Garden off toxic drugs (it's assumed but never acknowledged that they've been used), composting, providing for wildlife, even updating the institutional-type design.
And just selfishly, the Obama veg garden has been great for veg-garden writers, but writers with expertise in ornamentals, design and various landscape issues might also be called upon to write articles if First Families drew attentoin to these other subjects.
So here's how you can help a good cause AND promote yourself as a writer and expert:
- If you have a blog, blog about this subject on Earth Day, next Wednesday 4/22. (Here's the pitch: http://www.gardenrant.com/my_weblog/2009/04/garden-and-eco-bloggers-lets-jon-us-to-be-as-annoying-as-alice-waters.html ). All blog posts on the subject will be compiled permanently in the sidebar of the website, and listed in a GardenRant article as a participating blogger. Suggested topics are what you'd like to see at the White House OR your governor's mansion - or what's there already. Also your ideas for promoting better landscape practices in the public realm (government, industry, golf courses, etc).
- Whether you have a blog or not, find out what's currently going on around your governor's grounds and any planned improvements and write that up. If you're not a blogger, just write it up and send it to me and it'll be linked to in the sidebar under "Governors' Mansions". That way when the media look for info about a particular state, they'll be directed to you as a source. If you have a blog and write about it there, that post will ALSO be linked to under "Blog Articles".
A few of you have already signaled your interest and I hope to see lots more on Earth Day (or really, just sometime soon.) We expect many more "Supporting Organizations" to have gotten the okay of their boards this month and be included in that list on the sidebar soon (national and local-to-dc environmental, gardening and design groups primarily).
Susan
